Engagement Tracking Explained
What Is Engagement Tracking?
Engagement tracking measures how recipients interact with a campaign after it has been delivered. These interactions help determine whether recipients opened the message, clicked links, or otherwise engaged with the campaign content.
EVA records these interactions and converts them into engagement metrics that appear in the campaign performance view.
How Engagement Is Detected
When a campaign is delivered, EVA monitors specific interaction events generated by recipients.
These events typically include actions such as:
- opening the message
- clicking links included in the message
- interacting with campaign content
When these actions occur, EVA records the event and updates the campaign performance metrics.
Open Tracking
Open tracking measures whether recipients opened the campaign message.
For email campaigns, open tracking is typically recorded when the message content is loaded in the recipient’s email client. When this occurs, EVA registers the open event and updates the campaign's open rate metric.
Because open tracking depends on the behavior of the recipient’s email client, some opens may not always be detected.
Click Tracking
Click tracking measures whether recipients clicked links contained in the campaign message.
When tracking parameters are enabled, links included in the message are monitored. When a recipient clicks a link, EVA records the interaction and updates the campaign’s click rate metric.
Click tracking provides a strong indicator that recipients actively engaged with the campaign content.
SMS Engagement Tracking
SMS campaigns may also record interaction events when recipients click links included in the message.
Because SMS messages do not include open tracking in the same way as email, engagement is typically measured through link interactions.
How Tracking Data Updates Metrics
Each time an engagement event occurs, EVA updates the associated campaign performance metrics.
These updates allow teams to monitor how recipients interact with campaigns over time.
As additional recipients open or interact with the message, engagement metrics may continue updating after the campaign is delivered.
Why Engagement Tracking Matters
Engagement tracking provides insight into how recipients respond to campaign messaging.
By measuring engagement events, teams can better understand:
- which messages attract attention
- which links generate interaction
- how recipients respond to different campaign strategies
This information helps improve future campaigns and optimize messaging performance.
