Character Count, Encoding & SMS Segments
Why SMS message length matters
SMS messages have strict character limits that determine how messages are delivered to recipients. If a message exceeds the standard character limit, it may be divided into multiple SMS segments.
Each segment is sent separately by the carrier, even though most phones combine them into a single message for the recipient. Monitoring message length helps ensure that SMS messages remain clear while avoiding unnecessary message segmentation.
The SMS Template Editor automatically tracks message length to help users manage this.
Character count
As a message is written in the SMS Template Editor, the system displays the current number of characters used in the message.
This character count updates in real time as text, variables, or emojis are added or removed.
Tracking the character count helps users keep SMS messages concise and ensures the message remains within standard SMS limits.
SMS segments
If the character limit is exceeded, the message may be divided into multiple SMS segments.
Segments represent the number of SMS messages required to deliver the full message. For example, a longer message may be sent as two or more segments.
Although the recipient typically sees the segments combined into one message, each segment is still processed separately by SMS carriers.
Monitoring the segment count helps users control the length and structure of SMS messages.
Encoding considerations
Certain characters may change how SMS messages are encoded. For example, special characters or emojis may require a different encoding format, which can reduce the number of characters allowed in a single SMS segment.
When this happens, the SMS Template Editor updates the character and segment indicators to reflect the change.
Understanding encoding behavior helps users avoid unexpected increases in message length or segment count.
Managing message length
To keep SMS messages efficient and cost-effective, it is generally recommended to:
- keep messages concise
- avoid unnecessary characters or formatting
- review the segment count before sending messages
By monitoring character count and encoding behavior, users can ensure that SMS templates remain clear and optimized for delivery.
