Email Builder Structure: Layout and Blocks
Overview

The Email Builder is organized through a structured content system inside the Content tab. This system separates the email into two main building layers:
- Layout
- Blocks
This distinction is important because the builder is designed to separate structure from content. Instead of placing everything freely on the canvas, users first define how the email is arranged, then place content into that arrangement.
Understanding this structure makes template creation easier, keeps layouts more organized, and helps ensure that emails remain easier to edit as they become more complex.
The builder structure
Inside the Content tab, the left panel is divided into two main groups:
- Blocks
- Layout
These two groups serve different purposes.
Layout
The Layout group defines the structural arrangement of the email.
It includes:
- Columns
- Section
These are used to create the framework of the email before content is added.
Blocks
The Blocks group contains the actual content elements placed inside the layout.
Available block types include:
- Text
- Image
- Button
- Divider
- Social links
- Spacer
- HTML
These elements are used to build the visible content of the email after the structure has been defined.
Layout
The Layout group is used to organize how content will be positioned inside the email.
It controls the structural arrangement of the template and helps divide the email into more manageable content areas.
Columns
Columns are used when content needs to be arranged horizontally.
They allow different types of content to appear side by side within the same part of the email. This is useful when designing more structured layouts, such as combining text with images or presenting multiple content areas next to each other.
Section
A Section creates a separate layout area in the template.
Sections help divide the email into distinct parts so content can be grouped more clearly. They are useful for separating major parts of the email, such as introductory content, body content, promotional areas, or footer-style content.
Together, Columns and Section provide the layout framework of the template.
Blocks
The Blocks group contains the content elements that appear inside the email.
Each block type serves a different function within the template.
Text
Used for written content such as titles, headings, paragraphs, or supporting copy.
Image
Used to place visual content inside the template.
Button
Used for clickable call-to-action elements.
Divider
Used to visually separate content areas.
Social links
Used to add linked social media elements inside the email.
Spacer
Used to create empty space between content elements for cleaner layout control.
HTML
Used to insert custom HTML content for more advanced design or functionality needs.
How Layout and Blocks work together
The builder is designed so that Layout defines where content is organized, while Blocks define what content appears inside that structure.
In practice, this creates a clear workflow:
- Layout establishes the structural framework
- Blocks fill that framework with content
- the Properties panel is then used to edit the selected item
This separation makes the builder easier to understand and helps keep template design more controlled.
